The 1975 Dismissal
- The Fraser Liberal Opposition was able to block the passing of the Whitlam Labor Government’s budget in 1975 because it held a majority of upper house seats.
- The Governor-General of the day, Sir John Kerr, acted on the advice of Fraser, the Opposition leader, instead of the Prime Minister. Kerr appointed Fraser as the new prime minister – on the condition that he pass the budget and call an election for the new year.
