Activity 7i

Equal representation of the states in the Senate

1. States with larger populations have many more representatives than those with smaller populations to ensure that a vote cast by one person in a state with a larger population is worth roughly the same as the vote cast by one person in a state with a larger population.

2. The writers of the Constitution guaranteed equal representation in the Senate to every state, regardless of its population, to ensure the needs of the smaller states would not be overridden by the larger states.

3. Listening only to the majority voice can mean important needs are overlooked or not protected. Equal representation of each state in the Senate protects the majority in each state and prevents majorities in states with larger populations from dominating law-making at the expense of majorities in states with smaller populations.
